- Over half of the human population is infected with H. pylori. It is usually acquired in childhood and, when left untreated, generally persists for the host's life. Usually infection leads to no more than superficial or asymptomatic gastritis, however in some cases it is implicated in the development peptic ulcers, gastric cancer and low-grade lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). It is further associated with duodenal ulcers. Positive control: H. pylori infected stomach biopsy.
