- Dipyrone, also known as metamizole, is a non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic compound. It operates primarily through its active metabolites, which inhibit the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 to a lesser extent than traditional NSAIDs, leading to a decrease in the production of prostaglandins. This inhibition is thought to contribute to its analgesic and antipyretic effects. However, dipyrone′s mechanism also involves other less understood pathways that may contribute to its efficacy, including the modulation of cannabinoid and opioid systems, and effects on the L-arginine/nitric oxide pathway.
