- Mastic is the most flexible of the triterpene resins. It is translucent, yellowish in color and slightly aromatic Gum mastic is a resin obtained from the mastic tree. It is composed of an alkyl ether, ammonium nitrate, and carbon compounds. Gum mastic has been shown to inhibit the growth of sclerotium and has been used as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. The mechanism by which gum mastic inhibits the growth of sclerotium is not yet known, but it has been hypothesized that it may be through an inhibitory effect on neurological functions. This substance also contains organic solvents, such as sodium nitrate, which have shown to have a strong inhibitory effect on colophony in acidic conditions. Gum mastic is also considered to be a nutritional supplement and can be used in crop plants to yield better results.
