It is remarkably ineffective in oxidizing ethanol,but it readily catalyzes the oxidation of long-chain primary alcohols and the oxidation of S-(hydroxymethyl) glutathione. ADH5 mediates multiple cardiovascular functions. It plays in regulating heterocellular communication in the artery wall. .
