The encoded preproprotein undergoes O- and N-glycosylation; and proteolytic processing to generate alpha and beta subunits. Certain mutations in this gene are known to cause distinct forms of muscular dystrophy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants; all encoding the same protein.
