- Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is an antibody, which is a protein complex composed of four peptide chains - two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains arranged to form a Y type antibody monomer. Each IgG has two antigen-binding sites. IgG is the main antibody in blood and extracellular fluid that can control infection in human tissues. Plasma B cells produce and release IgG molecules. IgG is the only immunoglobulin that can pass through the human placenta, thereby protecting the fetus in the womb. IgG antibodies extracted from blood donor plasma can be used as intravenous immunoglobulins to treat immune deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases.
