- IL-12 p70 is the biologically active heterodimer of interleukin-12 (IL-12), consisting of disulfide-linked IL-12A (p35) and IL-12B (p40) subunits with a molecular weight of approximately 70 kDa. It is primarily produced by professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) following antigen stimulation, which distinguishes it from inactive p40 monomers or homodimers. Functionally, IL-12 p70 induces interferon-gamma (IFN-G Gamma) production, promotes the differentiation of naive T cells into T-helper 1 (Th1) cells, and enhances the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). It exerts its effects by binding to the IL12RB Beta1/B Beta2 heterodimeric receptor, which activates JAK-STAT4 signaling to regulate cytokine-responsive gene expression.IL-12 p70 shares the p40 subunit with IL-23 and the p35 subunit with IL-35. As a key link between innate and adaptive immunity, it plays a vital role in research on infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer immunotherapy.
