- IGF-2 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 2) is an important single-chain polypeptide growth factor composed of 67 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 7.5 kDa. It shares structural similarity with insulin and IGF-1 and belongs to the insulin-like growth factor family. In vivo, IGF-2 often binds to IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), which regulate its stability and activity. IGF-2 stimulates DNA synthesis and mitosis in various cell types, such as fibroblasts, muscle cells, and neural cells. It is commonly used in stem cell culture—including embryonic stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells—to sustain proliferative capacity. Under specific conditions and in combination with other factors, it can induce differentiation into muscle, cartilage, or neural cells. Additionally, IGF-2 plays regulatory roles in embryonic development and tumor cell growth.
