- RANKL (TNFSF11) is a member of the TNF superfamily. It is a type II transmembrane protein highly homologous between human and mouse, mainly expressed in T cells, dendritic cells and bone related cells. RANKL regulates osteoclast differentiation and bone remodeling, enhances T cell and dendritic cell functions, and participates in lymph node development. It signals through its membrane receptor RANK, while osteoprotegerin (OPG) acts as a soluble decoy receptor to balance its activity.
