- Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF), also known as Scatter Factor (SF), is a multifunctional cytokine primarily secreted by mesenchymal cells. It regulates diverse cellular biological behaviors by binding to its receptor c-Met, a tyrosine kinase receptor. In cell culture, HGF activates the PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK signaling pathways, thereby inhibiting apoptosis and promoting cell proliferation, survival, migration, and invasion. In hepatocyte culture, HGF enhances the functional maturation of liver-like cells. In organoid culture systems, it facilitates the formation of 3D structures (such as biliary networks and renal tubule branching) and regulates cell differentiation and morphogenesis.
