- eIF2-alpha is a protein encoded by the EIF2S1 gene which is approximately 36;1 kDa. eIF2-alpha is localised to the cytoplasmic granule and is involved in viral mRNA translation; influenza A; translation factors and regulation of lipid metabolism. It functions in the early steps of protein synthesis by forming a ternary complex with GTP and initiator tRNA. This complex binds to a 40S ribosomal subunit; followed by mRNA binding to form a 43S preinitiation complex. eIF2-alpha is expressed in the liver; nervous system; lung; blood and kidney. Mutations in the EIF2S1 gene result in Wolcott-Rallison syndrome. The antibody was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This primary antibody specifically binds to endogenous eIF2-alpha protein which only binds about S51 when S51 is phosphorylated.
