- CD81 is a protein encoded by the CD81 gene. CD81 is localised to the cell membrane. It is involved in the B-cell receptor signalling pathway; IL-2 pathway and class I MHC mediated antigen processing and presentation. It is a cell-surface protein that is characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. The protein mediates signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development; activation; growth and motility. This protein also appears to promote muscle cell fusion and support myotube maintenance. CD81 is expressed in the nervous system; lung; skin; liver and lymph node. Mutations in the CD81 gene may result in immunodeficiency. STJ96759 was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This polyclonal antibody detects endogenous levels of CD81 protein.
