- The human Cullin family of genes consists of Cul-1; Cul-2; Cul-3; Cul-4a; Cul-4b; and Cul-5. Among the 6 members; Cul-1 and Cul-2 are very well characterized. Cul-2 is homologous to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae cdc53 gene. Studies have shown that Cul-1 forms an E3 ubiquitin-ligase; called the SCF complex (Skp1 and F-box protein such as bTrCp or FWD1); which controls the proteolysis of G1 cell cycle regulatory proteins.
