It forms a stable non-covalent complex with alpha-thrombin; thereby abolishing its ability to cleave fibrinogen. In nature; Hirudin is found in the salivary glands of Hirudo medicinalis that has a blood anticoagulant property. Hirudin can be used to treat heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.
