- Specificity: Anti-P. falciparum (Clone PFAL-7871) is specific for the Histidine rich protein II of P. falciparum. Background: Plasmodium is a genus of parasitic protozoa that causes the disease malaria; a significant global health concern. There are several species of Plasmodium that can infect humans with the most common being P. falciparum; P. vivax; P. malariae; and P. ovale. The parasite is transmitted by the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Once inside the host; the parasite infects and multiplies within red blood cells. HRP-2 is a protein released by Plasmodium falciparum into the bloodstream when it infects red blood cells. It is unique to P. falciparum and has become an important target for diagnostics; especially rapid diagnostic testing.
