- Specificity: Clone 12E7 is specific for the steroid hormone cortisol. Antigen Distribution: Cortisol is a steroid hormone that can be found in blood and other body fluids. Background: Cortisol is a crucial steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands that plays a vital role in regulating various bodily functions; including metabolism; immune response; and stress management. Often referred to as the stress hormone;" cortisol helps the body respond to physical and emotional stressors by increasing blood sugar; suppressing inflammation; and regulating blood pressure. Testing cortisol levels can be extremely useful in diagnosing and monitoring conditions related to adrenal gland function; such as Cushing's syndrome (characterized by excessive cortisol) or Addison's disease (characterized by insufficient cortisol).
