PCP disrupts the normal functioning of the central nervous system by blocking N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors; which are involved in the transmission of excitatory signals in the brain. As a result; PCP induces hallucinations; distorted perceptions of reality; and a sense of detachment from the environment. The drug can be ingested orally; snorted; smoked; or injected. Diagnostic testing for PCP abuse typically involves urine analysis; as PCP and its metabolites can be detected in urine samples.
