Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4), also known as CD152, is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Expressed by T-cells, it binds to the ligands CD80 and CD86 on antigen presenting cells and subsequently inhibits T-cell activation. Ipilimumab (YERVOY™) is a recombinant human monoclonal antibody which blocks the interaction of CTLA-4 with its ligands and is approved by the FDA for the treatment of melanoma. Blocking CTLA-4 also has significant potential in treating conditions which include SLE, coeliac disease and autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALS).
