January 2012:

The UK Government is launching its Life Sciences Strategy and with a review of innovation in the NHS to meet the challenges of the future and also attract further investment to the UK. This aims to bring the scienctific base & NHS together to make sure that the UK is in the best position possible in the world for companies to invest in the discovery, development and commercialisation of medical innovations.

This initiative is centred around a new £180 million 'catalyst fund' that is geared to assist the next generation of medical breakthroughs become the next generation of major companies, benefitting the economy. This boost to funding focusses primarily on the funding gap that exists in the so called ‘valley of death’. The gap between the moment that a bright new idea is developed in the laboratory & the point at which a new drug / technology can be invested in by funders.
